In 2015, Germany opened its borders to more than one million refugees - the vast majority from Syria and Iraq. New shelters were built all across the country and empty buildings were opened up to host asylum seekers. I visited two of those shelters in early 2016. The series that emerged from those visits turned out very differently than I expected. Above an unmistakable undercurrent of trauma and sorrow, I encountered joy and laughter, carefree children playing in the streets.
